Further south in the Okinawan chain–the Miyako and Yaeyama islands (collectively known as the Sakishima Islands) are as full of music as their more well known big-brother, the main island of Okinawa. The music on this mix includes sad melodies, work songs, love songs, and celebrations of island life, with some of the best-known traditional songs from these islands as well as some more modern compositions. All the artists are from Sakishima, with a couple songs sung in the local Miyakufutsu language. This is a collection of music that will be almost completely unknown to most K.O.L. listeners, and we are very happy to continue to explore the wonderful musical islands of the Ryukyu or Okinawan island chain.
