At the Bunkamura Le Cinema in Shibuya through this Thursday 11/11 are two remarkable music documentaries that any music fan should not miss. First is the ‘The Jazz Loft’, the story of legendary photographer W. Eugene Smith and his loft on 6th Avenue in New York that became a gathering spot for jazz musicians in the late 1950s and through the 60s. The film intersperses the story of Smith, a supremely talented but troubled artist, with the loft space where musicians such as Zoot Sims and Thelonious Monk would come by (there is one incredible scene of Monk and arranger/composer Hall Overton laying out the charts for Monk’s upcoming large-group Town Hall Concert). Although there are a few odd editing and sequencing choices, overall this is a really fascinating look at not only how artists work, alone or when together, but also a beautiful portrait of a specific time in New York City when such an art space could be born organically.
The other film, back for an encore showing, is Amazing Grace, the filmed live performance of Aretha Franklin’s live gospel performance in Los Angeles in 1972. It’s almost impossible to over praise this film; Aretha’s voice, alongside the Rev. James Cleveland’s choir and backing band including Cornell Dupree and Bernard Purdie, is nothing but transcendent. There are three peaks within the short 88 minutes that left many in the church audience in tears, as well as us in the audience watching 50 years later. You don’t have to believe in the power of Jesus to be overwhelmed by the music in this, simply a treasure of a live recording.

一つ目は、『The Jazz Loft』。1950年代後半から60年代にかけてジャズミュージシャンの集う場所となったニューヨーク6番街のロフトと、伝説の写真家、W.ユージン・スミスについて描れています。この映画は、最高の才能を持ちながらも問題を抱えていたスミスの物語と、ズート・シムズやセロニアス・モンクなどのミュージシャンが立ち寄ったロフトの空間が織り交ぜられています。特に、モンクとアレンジャー兼作曲家のホール・オーバートンが、モンクの大編成によるタウン・ホール・コンサートのチャートを作っているシーンは必見です。 編集や見せ方の順列など多少理解し難い点がありますが、アーティストがどのように一人で、あるいは一緒に仕事をしていたかということが分かり、そしてこのようなアートスペースが有機的に生まれたニューヨークのある時代についての美しい物語を感じることができる大変魅力的な作品です。
もう一つの作品は、1972年にロサンゼルスで行われたアレサ・フランクリンのゴスペルライブを撮影した『Amazing Grace』。おそらく映画館で見るのは最後のチャンスとなるアンコール上映です。この映画はいくら誉めても足りないくらい素晴らしい内容で、ジェームス・クリーブランド牧師の聖歌隊やコーネル・デュプリー、バーナード・パーディーなどのバックバンドと一緒に歌うアレサの歌声は、超絶的としか言いようがありません。88分という短い時間の中に3つのピークがあり、当時の教会の観客の多くが涙を流し、50年後に見ている私たちも涙を流しました。イエスの力を信じていなくても、この音楽に圧倒されることができる、まさに宝のようなライブ録音です。
